<title>The Team | Net Zero Tracker</title>

The Net Zero Tracker is an international consortium project between the Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), the Data-Driven EnviroLab (DDL), NewClimate Institute and Oxford Net Zero.

The team is drawn from the Net Zero Tracker's four partner organisations, all experts in their fields.

Lead

John manages the Net Zero Tracker. He specialises in analysis and communicating climate science and policy to the public for both the Tracker and the <a href="https://eciu.net/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit</a>.
 
A New Zealand qualified lawyer, John also runs <a href="http://e-nvironmentalist.com/">the e-nvironmentalist</a>, a climate communication blog; <a href="https://consultclimate.com/">Consult Climate</a>, a sustainability consultancy; and Kiwis in Climate, a non-partisan group of international New Zealanders involved in climate and related fields.
 
He holds a Master of Laws in environmental policy and earth science from UCL, and undergraduate degrees in history and law from the University of Otago.<a href="mailto:john.lang@eciu.net"> </a>

John Lang

Communications and Fundraising Coordinator

Frances joined the Net Zero Tracker team at the ECIU in 2023. She has a background in documentary research and has worked on a number of productions for commissioners including the BBC. She has also worked as an organiser for several initiatives campaigning on issues of climate, housing, and workers' rights. 

She holds a degree from the University of Bristol and is particularly interested in the equity and justice dimensions of the transition towards a net zero world.

Frances Green

Data Lead

Camilla is the Data Lead for the Net Zero Tracker, where she coordinates a heroic team of volunteers to keep the Tracker’s database shipshape and up-to-date. She is also pursuing her doctorate on how biodiversity and communities fit into net zero policy. To these roles, Camilla brings a wide-ranging background in law, an evolving knowledge of ecology, and a particular interest in how net zero will affect the people and ecosystems of the Global South.
 Camilla holds a BA and an LLB from the University of Cape Town, an LLM from U.C. Berkeley and an MSc in Environment Change and Management from Oxford.

Camilla Hyslop

Database lead

Diego Manya is a Data Scientist and Masters of Environmental Management from the Yale School of Environment. He has extensive experience working in environmental management, sustainable development, international cooperation and project implementation, supporting private and public actors in the US, Latin-America and the Caribbean.
 His focus is in interdisciplinary research and supports multiple initiatives combining data discovery, remote sensing, statistics and machine learning in topics like urbanization, climate change and equity. He is an Environmental Engineer from the UNALM in Peru and is based in Lima, Peru.

Diego Manya

NewClimate Institute Analyst

For her work at NewClimate Institute, Sybrig Smit specialises in tracking climate action and policies. She focuses on non-state and subnational climate action, including potential GHG impact assessments of climate targets set by cities, regions, companies and international initiatives. Sybrig is one of the authors of the Corporate Climate Responsibility Monitor and leads the work on food systems. 
Sybrig holds a BSc in Future Planet Studies at the University of Amsterdam, with a specialisation in Human Geography, and a MSc in Sustainable Development at Utrecht University, with a specialisation in Energy and Materials.

Director, Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit

Peter Chalkley joined the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit when it launched in 2014 having previously spent 10 years in corporate communications consultancy advising private and public sector clients on communications strategy, media relations and stakeholder engagement with a particular focus on sustainability.
 
During his time at ECIU, Pete has helped to develop the organisation’s strategy and direction, expanding its functions to further the mission. He has helped to author a number of reports on various aspects of climate change and energy.

Peter Chalkley

Oxford Net Zero Research Assistant

Vin joined the Net Zero Tracker as a Data Contributor in 2023. He now helps with the day-to-day running of the Tracker as part of the Oxford Net Zero team wherein he coordinates a diverse cohort of volunteers from the four corners of the world. He is also pursuing an MSc in Public Health focusing on Environment and Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Currently, he is writing his research project about the health issues of worker exposure in the global semiconductor industry.
He is a clinical research nurse with a specialization in early-phase clinical trials. At the NIHR Imperial Clinical Research Facility in London, he helps run various academic and commercial studies. Born and raised in the Philippines, Vin holds a BSc in Nursing from the Our Lady of Fatima University in Valenzuela City, Metro Manila.

John Bervin Galang

Professor at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford

Thomas Hale’s research explores how we can manage transnational problems effectively and fairly. He seeks to explain how political institutions evolve – or not – to face the challenges raised by globalisation and interdependence, with a particular emphasis on environmental, economic and health issues. 
He holds a PhD in Politics from Princeton University, a master's degree in Global Politics from the London School of Economics, and an AB in public policy from Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School. 
A US national, Professor Hale has studied and worked in Argentina, China and Europe. His most recent book is Long Problems: Climate Change and the Challenge of Governing Across Time (Princeton, 2024). Professor Hale co-leads the <a href="https://zerotracker.net/">Net Zero Tracker</a>.

Dr. Thomas Hale

Climate Consultant

Nick is the communications &amp; stakeholder lead for the Net Zero Tracker. His role is to shape and execute communications approaches which put the Tracker into the hands of key audiences, from journalists, NGOs &amp; campaigners, to policymakers, and corporate networks. Nick also leads our liaison with the climate community and key stakeholders at large, to synchronise our efforts and maximise impact. 

Throughout his career, Nick has helped purpose-led brands to articulate clear, solutions-led stories to encourage climate action and to build trust in system-level change.

Nick has led communications and thought leadership across a wide range of areas in the sustainability space, including clean technology, academia, conservation and product carbon footprinting.

Angel Hsu, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Public Policy and the Environment, Ecology and Energy Program (E3P) at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and holds a PhD in Forestry and Environmental Studies from Yale University. 
She is the Founder and Principal Investigator of Data-Driven EnviroLab. Angel previously held appointments at Yale-NUS college in Singapore as Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies, and the World Resources Institute (WRI) where she managed and led WRI’s efforts to develop corporate greenhouse gas accounting and reporting initiatives in developing countries, including China. 
Angel was also the lead author of the 2018 UNEP Emissions Gap report chapter on non-state actors and an author for the IPCC AR6. Angel holds an M Phil in Environmental Policy from the University of Cambridge, and a BS in Biology and BA in Political Science from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC.

Dr. Angel Hsu

Frederic Hans focuses on tracking and evaluating climate action at the national, sub-national, and corporate level. Frederic has led and contributed to several projects developing frameworks on low-emission strategies, guidance on effective climate target setting, and quantitatively analysing greenhouse gas emissions trajectories. At NewClimate, he is part of the core teams of the Climate Action Tracker evaluating national climate change efforts and the Corporate Climate Responsibility Monitor assessing companies’ climate action. 
 
Prior to joining NewClimate Institute, he worked as a research assistant in two research projects on environmental governance at ETH Zurich and IHEID Geneva and spent time in the Brasília office of the KfW Entwicklungsbank supporting investment projects on renewable energies and environmental protection.
 
Frederic holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of St. Gallen and a M.A. in Comparative and International Studies from ETH Zurich with a focus on quantitative research methods and political economy. For his master’s thesis, he applied quantitative models to analyse how climate-induced famines affect long term socioeconomic development. Frederic completed a course in 2016 to become a Certified Expert in Climate and Renewable Energy Finance at the Frankfurt School UNEP Collaborating Centre for Climate and Sustainable Energy Finance.

Frederic Hans

Professor and co-founder of New Climate Institute

Prof. Dr. Niklas Höhne is an internationally renowned expert in climate policy with over 20 years of experience, participating in the international climate negotiations since 1995. He co-founded NewClimate Institute, where he oversees analysis on national and international climate policy and assumes various management roles. He also holds a professorship “mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions” at Wageningen University. 
 
Niklas has led and co-authored over 300 studies related to international and national climate policies, including three publications in Nature, contributions to the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Assessment Reports of the IPCC since 2003 and all UNEP Emissions Gap Reports since 2010. He created the Climate Action Tracker that tracks commitments and actions of countries on climate change. He has advised many governments and organisations and participated as an expert in hearings of the European and German parliament.
 
Prior to co-founding NewClimate Institute, Niklas worked at Ecofys, a climate and energy consultancy (2001 to 2014), and the UNFCCC secretariat (1998 to 2001).

NewClimate Institute Senior Analyst

Dr. Takeshi Kuramochi leads projects that analyses greenhouse emission scenarios for major emitting economies as well as subnational and non-state actors. 
 
Takeshi has published more than thirty peer-reviewed articles and numerous other research reports. Since 2016, Takeshi contributes to the annual UNEP Emissions Gap Reports as a lead author on the chapter assessing G20 countries’ progress on emission reductions. Externally, Takeshi serves as a member of the UNFCCC Race to Zero campaign’s External Peer Review Group and Science Base Targets initiative’s Scientific Advisory Group.  
 
Prior to joining NewClimate Institute, Takeshi worked at the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES, Japan) and at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Utrecht University, where he is currently a visiting researcher.

Executive Director of Oxford Net Zero and CO2RE

Steve researches climate science and policy at the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment in the University of Oxford. He currently serves as Executive Director of both<a href="https://netzeroclimate.org/about-us/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Oxford Net Zero</a> and<a href="https://co2re.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> CO2RE</a>, two programmes focussed on stabilising the climate both rapidly and sustainably.
 
Prior to Oxford, Steve co-led the Climate Science Team in the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) where he played a role in the legislation of the UK's net zero target. Before that he was Head of Science at the Committee on Climate Change. He has a PhD in atmospheric physics from Imperial College London and is a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society.
 
Steve has published on a range of topics including carbon dioxide removal and metrics for comparing the emissions of different greenhouse gases. He is co-developer of the<a href="https://zerotracker.net/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Net Zero Tracker</a>, and lead author of<a href="https://www.stateofcdr.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> The State of Carbon Dioxide Removal</a>.
 
Alongside continuing to advise government, businesses and agencies, Steve communicates climate change to children and wider audiences. He helped write <a href="https://usborne.com/gb/climate-crisis-for-beginners-9781474979863" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Climate Crisis for Beginners</a> by Usborne Books, and was a contributor to the <a href="https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/301/301516/climate-change--a-ladybird-expert-book-/9780718185855.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ladybird book on Climate Change</a>.

Oxford Net Zero Research Associate

Denise initially volunteered with Net Zero Tracker as a data coder. She has now joined the Oxford Net Zero team to support the day-to-day running of the Tracker and is responsible for training and coordinating a global cohort of volunteers to ensure the integrity of the NZT database. 
Denise is also an EFFAS Certified Environmental, Social and Governance Analyst® (CESGA) and a seasoned financial public relations and corporate communications professional, with over 12 years of experience working with listed companies as well as professional and public bodies.
Born in Hong Kong and now based in London, U.K., Denise holds a MSc in International Management and a BSc in Management from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and a certificate in Business Sustainability Management awarded by the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership.
